Process Guide · October 1, 2026
Net metering is what actually turns your rooftop solar system into lower electricity bills. It replaces your existing meter with a bidirectional one that tracks both the power you draw from the grid and the surplus power you export back — that exported surplus gets adjusted against your bill. Without net metering approved and fitted, your panels can generate power, but you won't get the full billing benefit.
In Uttar Pradesh, electricity distribution is handled by regional discoms under UPPCL — MVVNL covers Lucknow and nearby districts, while PuVVNL covers the Purvanchal region including Mau and Ballia. Which discom your net metering application goes to depends entirely on which region your electricity connection falls under, so the paperwork and point of contact differ by location even though the overall process is the same.
Here is exactly how the process runs, step by step, once your system is installed:
Application Submitted
Your vendor submits a net metering application to your discom — today this is largely routed through the national PM Surya Ghar portal, which forwards the request to the correct regional discom.
Feasibility Inspection
The discom schedules a technical feasibility inspection to verify the installed system matches what was applied for.
Agreement Signed
A formal net metering agreement is signed between you, as the consumer, and the discom.
Meter Replaced
The discom's technician removes your old meter and fits the new bidirectional net meter, usually at no or nominal cost.
Commissioning Report
A commissioning report is generated — this is also the document your subsidy disbursement is tied to.
Timelines vary by discom workload and season, and this is usually where self-installed or unregistered-vendor systems get stuck — chasing a discom application without an empanelled vendor's registered login and local contacts can mean weeks of follow-up with no clear status. An UPNEDA-empanelled vendor already has that access and an existing relationship with the regional discom office.
As your installer, we handle this entire net metering coordination — application, inspection scheduling, agreement paperwork, and follow-up with MVVNL or PuVVNL — as part of the installation service, so you are not the one making repeat trips to the discom office. If your net metering request already feels stuck somewhere, reach out and we can check the status for you.
